After a few successful demo's/EP'S, these Belgians are pushing up the ante. It's clear ALKERDEEL has progressed quite a bit since the release of 'Luizig'. Although the familiar elements are still present - raw sludge/doom infused with filthy black metal - the compositions have matured and gained more depth. The lo-fi approach of the previous albums made room for a more thoughtful recording process, making it sound perhaps more accessible but also allows the sound to reveal all its sluggish nuances. But rest assured, ALKERDEEL remains ALKERDEEL: a mean putrid steamroller that takes no prisoners!

BeantwoordenVerwijderenFreunde roher Black-, Doom- und Sludge-Klänge dürfen sich auf Ende Februar freuen, denn dann erscheint Alkerdeels Debütalbum Morinde. Wer die Belgier bereits kennt, weiß ungefähr was ihn erwarten wird. Alle anderen dürfen gespannt sein, Morinde ist ein klanglich rohes und schroffes Werk, in dem schwarze Rohheit und Härte mit düsterer Atmosphäre und doomiger Zähheit kombiniert wird. Morinde enthält zwar nur vier Lieder, dennoch kommt das Album auf eine Gesamtspielzeit von knapp 42 Minuten. Am Anfang und Ende der Scheibe sind überdies dezente Ambientgeräusche zu hören, die Mories von Gnaw Their Tongues beigetragen hat.
So beginnt Winterteens dann auch düster und langsam. Der anfängliche Ambient wird alsbald durch eine langsam gespielte sowie dreckig klingende Gitarre abgelöst. Irgendwann kommen schleppendes Schlagwerk und ein stark verzerrter Kreischgesang hinzu. Dies alles wirkt sehr düster und minimalistisch, Winterteens ist in der ersten Hälfte schleppend, drückend und eingängig. In der zweiten Hälfte gibt es rhythmische Variationen zu hören, die durch treibendes Tempo und eingängige Gitarren bestimmt werden. Das folgende Horsesaw ist lediglich dreieinhalb Minuten lang, aber schnell, harsch und sehr aggressiv. Der Kreischgesang ist sehr heftig, er erinnert mich in seiner harschen Eindringlichkeit ein wenig an Akitsas großartiges Album Goétie. Nach dem eher gemächlichen Winterteens wird man vor Horsesaw brutal aus dem Winterschlaf heraus katapultiert.
Mit etwas weniger als sechs Minuten ist Hessepikn gleichfalls kurz, allerdings entgegengesetzt zu Horsesaw. Hessepikn ist ein schleppendes Lied, in dem eingängige, geradezu hypnotische Gitarren und eine heiser flüsternde Stimme zu hören sind. Hessepikn enthält nicht viel, hat aber dennoch eine intensive Atmosphäre, die den tollen Riffs zu verdanken ist. Erst in der letzten Minute verändert sich das Lied und Alkerdeel wechseln hinüber zum rohen, schnellen und kranken Black Metal. Dieser ist einfach nur zerstörerisch und absolut verstörend. Das abschließende Du Levande ist 20 Minuten lang und beginnt zunächst peitschend schnell, verändert sich aber natürlich im Verlauf. Über weite Strecken sind sehr drückende Doom-Passagen zu hören, in denen stellenweise nur monotones Riffing zu hören ist. Im Hintergrund sind phasenweise auch düstere, gut inszenierte Tastenklänge zu hören, die nebulös durch den klanglichen Raum wabern.
Morinde ist ein eindringliches, intensives Album, welches jedem zusagen sollte, der die obskure und bizarre Vermischung von Black Metal und Sludge/Doom zu schätzen versteht. Mir gefällt das Album sehr gut, da Alkerdeel bewusst einen rohen, teils dreckigen Klang gewählt haben, der sehr gut zur verstörenden, manchmal auch entarteten und kranken Musik passt. Mir gefallen aber auch die zeitweilig minimalistischen Passagen, die hypnotisch sind und dem Drone gleich kommen. Morinde enthält wüsten, harschen und hassgetriebenen Black Metal ebenso wie stilvolle atmosphärische Passagen. Man sollte sich aber des rohen Klanges vorab bewusst sein, denn mit Hochglanz und damit einhergehender Schönheit hat Morinde absolut nichts zu tun - was ich sehr begrüße, einige aber abschrecken dürfte.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenFounded in 2005 in a small town located between Ghent and Bruges, Belgian sludge black metal band Alkerdeel released a demo and an EP in 2008, before their debut longplayer De Speenzalvinge came out two years later. Now in early 2012 they are back with its successor Morinde, which is also the first time I have come across them. The album contains two long tracks that begin and end it, with two shorter ones crammed in between.
Nowadays a lot of black metal bands are going for a rather polished sound, while others still remain true to the primeval (primitive?) roots of the movement’s beginning. Alkerdeel certainly don’t belong to the former group. They are even sounding more lo-fi than the latter one, and in the hands of any less talented young men, the result would have been atrocious, but somehow the quartet manages to pull it off. Why is that? Despite the very garagy production, it is still possible to distinguish the different elements. The second track Horsesaw is a rumbling proto black metal eruption which ends after only two minutes, while the nearly six minute long Hessepikn shows the band from their more atmospheric side, surprising even with strangely moving spoken word lyrics.
The two main tracks are the thirteen minute long opener Winterteens and the twenty minute long closer Du Levande, which are bookended by ambient parts recorded by Mories from Gnaw Their Tongues. These two epic tracks contain the same elements than the two more concise middle pieces, yet all is arranged in a way that you never what will hit you next. It all starts with sludgy doom metal in a very underground style, before a nearly grindcore fast black metal parts rips you into a wholly different mood. At times there are hints of Hellhammer and some Norwegian black metal influences, but Alkerdeel are smart enough to make it their very own and thoroughly evil thing.
The songwriting at times is running the risk of getting lost underneath the deliberate muddy production, but if you pay attention, you will be amazed at the great guitar riffs and subtle bass lines throughout the material. Alkerdeel combine the virtues of sludge doom and early black metal with the fuck-you attitude of garage punk, a hybrid which I never thought could work until I had the pleasure of listening to Morinde. If you are truly tired of glossy black metal productions, and have the impression that in regular sludge and doom metal music, there is just not enough happening, then you might want to check out this evil sounding quartet from the Flemish region of Belgium. Not only is Morinde a surprisingly great album, but it even manages to stand out as a thing all of its own!
